Special Rapporteur

EIHR met with the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression at UNECA in Addis Ababa. The meeting is organized in the context of the Special Rapporteur’s official visit to examine the situation of the rights to freedom of opinion and expression in the country. Moreover, the meeting is aimed to bring together civil society representatives working on human rights to participate in an interactive, open, and informal discussion with the Special Rapporteur and to provide an opportunity to share information on:

1) Good practices and challenges relating to human rights as it pertains to freedom of opinion and expression, including with regard to media freedom, freedom of expression and hate speech, Internet freedom, freedom of association and of peaceful assembly, access to digital communications and privacy, etc.

2) The practices of business companies, especially those from the Information and Communications Technology sector, with regard to their responsibilities to respect freedom of opinion and expression. 3) Potential recommendations to be considered by the Special Rapporteur in the context of his visit.
