Background

Ethiopian Initiative for Human Rights/EIHR is a membership non-governmental, non-profit making, non-partisan, and non-political organization campaigning for a country where human rights are enjoyed by all. More specifically, EIHR strives for the establishment of a democratic system, the promotion of good-governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights. It also established to contribute to the on-going democratic process through the promotion of ethical and civic education. EIHR is registered on 4 July 2019 under registry number 4255. 

The founding members are Ethiopians from all walks of life that are committed to the cause of human rights and the prevalence of the rule of law. Regular membership is open to all individuals of 18 years and above, provided committed to the above-mentioned causes. However, individuals who have had roles in institutions known for human rights violations and members of any political party cannot become members.

As described in its Articles of Association, the three principal organs that determine, guide, and manage the directions are the General Assembly, Executive Committee, and the Secretariat respectively. The General Assembly determines the policy, principles, and operational plan with budget. It also elects its chair-person, vice-chair person, secretary, five members of the Executive Committee, and an internal Auditor for a three years term. The Executive Committee guides and oversees the implementation of programs. It is composed of a president, vice-president, the treasurer, and two other members. The Secretariat, led by the Managing Director, manages the implementation of programs as well as projects and responsible for the day-to-day activities of the organization.
